Welcome to Stockholms Språkskola

Stockholms Språkskola started the autumn term of 2001 with class 0 (pre-school) up to class 9. We are a small school where nobody is anonymous. We also run an after-school  department (”fritids”) in close cooperation with the school. The after-school activities focus on promoting the social development of the children. We want the children to function in groups and to accept each other’s differences. The children are encouraged to initiate their own activities  and are given plenty of room for play.

Some of the advantages with Stockholms Språkskola

.  We are a small school.

.   As of the autumn term of 2005, our work has been inspired by Maria Montessori and

her ideas about the ways children develop and think.

.  We have individualized education suited to the child’s age and maturity level.

.  We work with age-mixed groups.

.  We cooperate with swimming- and nature schools.

.  We have a committed, contented staff, which is ample in relation to the number of

   students.

Our goal is that every child shall

.  Become independent but also develop in groups.

.   Develop his/her natural sense of order, responsibiliby and consideration for others.

.  Gain an understanding of his/her environment and appreciate his/her own culture as

   well as those of others.

.  Work to develop his/her major and fine motor ability.

.  Have the chance to work with all his/ her senses.

.  Develop his/her sense of the Swedish and English languages.

Routines for child security

Break watchers/supervision responsibility

During all breaks, we have two break watchers (rastvakter) and one reserve. The supervision responsibility is personal, i.e. each break watcher is obliged to find a replacement if he or she does not have the time. These changes are reported to the school management. If someone in the school management gives the break watcher another assignment, the personal responsibi-

lity falls on the person in the school management. The school management informs break watcher reserves if someone is absent on account of illness or leave. During breaks, one break

watcher goes straight to the football field and the other one tries to bring along as many pupils as possible. Who does what is up to the break watchers.

Home messages

All information to the home, except the weekly letters, shall be approved by the school management before being sent. Messages with important information should be provided with

counterfoils. Parents who fail to reply should be telephoned.

Activities outside the school area

A message should be placed on the headmaster’s desk listing which staff and students who participate in an excursion.

Accidents among students

If a pupil is so seriously injured that a hospital visit is considered necessary, a person on our staff accompanies the pupil in a taxi. The parents should be contacted as soon as possible. If a student brings an object considered dangerous, the object will be confiscated. The parents should be informed and are expected to fetch the object at school. A telephone should always be available on the school premises.. The school has an agreement with a doctor, Emil, in Rågsved (tel. 724 07 10). If he is not available, or if the case is considered too serious, one of these numbers will be used: SOS 112, The Astrid Lindgren Childrens’ Hospital, Emergency ward: 517 701 02.

Emergency kit

Must never be locked up. Should contain alsol spirits, band-aid, cotton wool, gauze bandage,

elastic bandage and taxi cheques.

Emergency file

There should be a file containing the phone numbers to the parents of all pupils. This file should be kept in the cupboard with the pupil files. This cupboard should be locked and everyone on the staff should have their own key.

Sick leave

It is compulsory for a parent to report if a pupil is ill. The pupil’s class should be indicated as well. This should take place  between 8.00 and 8.20 AM.  Teachers who are affected by the absence should be informed. The staff should report their sick leave as early as possible to someone in the school management.

Social services

If a pupil appears to feel bad, the staff can contact the youth division of the Social Services in the home area of the pupil in question.

School Health Care and  School Nurse Activities

School health care is for all pupils and encompasses health controls and simple nursing efforts.

Our school health has a primarily preventive approach and we are bound to secrecy. Emergency care needs are referred to a health care central, ”Vårdcentralen”.

The Social Administration, ”Socialstyrelsen” is our head authority. The school nurse also works on the school’s Pupil Care Team together with the School Welfare Officer, the Remedial Teacher and the Head Master.

The school nurse also participates in the lessons to some degree. The school health care continues the vaccination program which the Child Welfare Centre started.

There is a School Doctor for compulsory health controls. The parents of the children are informed before every vaccination and doctor’s visit.

Action Plan in case of death or serious injury/accident during school hours

1.  The adult who arrives first to the scene of the accident sees to it that ambulance and police are called and that the Head Master is informed. Someone stays with the injured person and, if possible, gives first aid until the ambulance arrives.

2.  The Head Master coordinates actions and contacts persons in the crisis group.

Family members are contacted and given information as to which hospital the injured person has been brought.

N.B. Do not give news of a death over the telephone!

3.  Other staff involved receives information in order to talk to and take care of the      pupils in the class room.

4.  If there are siblings at the school, they will be cared for outside the class room by someone they know well.

5.  If needed, the Head Master informs all the pupils (in the dining room) about what has happened. Any information to the mass media will be handled by the Head Master.

6.  Pupils return to assembly in each class-room together with class teacher/mentor.

7.  As early as possible a parents’ meeting for the affected class is arranged. The crisis group together with class teacher/mentor are responsible for the program.

8.  Other parents can obtain information by telephoning the school office.

The  swimming school

Information to parents and children

The swimming training for your child in Stockholms Språkskola starts on Monday 6th September.

The goal of the swimming training is for the children to become accustomed to the water, learn to do the cheststroke and the backstroke with the aid of ”the prolonged arm” and to know the rules of bathing and boating.

In order to learn to swim in a calm and relaxed manner, it is necessary to be accustomed to the water. Therefore the children are trained in jumping, dipping, floating, gliding, holding their breath and blowing out air under water, etc.

It is important to practice the correct technique of arm and leg movements right from the start, so we will devote a lot of time to this. Pupils who can already swim will practice to improve their skills further and to improve their technique and general condition.

Please inform the swimming teacher of any illness which might be an obstacle to the swimming, e.g. ear problems (ear inflammation or tubes in the ears), asthma, allergy, etc. Try to avoid dentist’s visits or any other absence on swimming school days, as there are so few lessons.

The swimming course emcompasses 12 lessons, 30 minutes each, once a week.

Hygiene is important in the swimming hall, therefore everyone must shower before the swim and long hair should be piled up with an elastic or a bathing cap. N.B. No neck chains, ear rings or watches while bathing.

Bring the following to the swimming bath:

   .  Swimwear

   .  Towel

.  Bathing cap or elastic for long hair

Welcome to the swimming school to watch! But please note

that if you do, you must change into swimwear or shorts and

T-shirt. For hygienic reasons, everyone in the swimming hall

must do this.

Student participation at Stockholms Språkskola in Rågsved

The right to student participation is to be based on Article 12, about freedom of opinion and the right to be heard as well as Artcle 13, about freedom of speech and information (see The UN Child Convention).

Goals:

.   That the children are given the possibility to influence the contents of the activities.

.   That the children are given the possibility to convert their own ideas and thoughts into
action and to see the result of this.

.   That each child will feel secure in its group and dare to speak up.

This is what we do:

.   Brainstorming before starting to work with themes ”temaarbeten” (everyone together).

.   We apply majority decisions in certain contexts.

.   Class council.

.   Pupil council.

.   Environmental council.

.   Informally, we believe that we have made some progress, as the children/pupils know
us adults and dare turn to us.

.   We work continuously with ”school-mate chats”, (kompissamtal) which is a tool to
    prevent mobbing.
